Ω 18 — Codex System

18 — Codex System

Purpose

This document specifies the Codex system — the in-game lore database that accumulates as the player progresses. It covers the discovery engine (how entries unlock), the full catalog of ~170 entries organized into 9 categories, the UI specification, and the integration with achievements, Pilot Rank XP, and narrative pacing.

The Codex is the game's memory. Everything the player has encountered — enemies, NPCs, physics, theology, history, personal logs — is preserved here. Reading it is optional. Completing it is one of the hardest achievements in the game.

Design Philosophy

The Codex is not a manual

It does not explain game mechanics. It extends the narrative. A player who reads only the HUD and plays intuitively will never need the Codex to succeed. A player who reads everything will understand why the war is happening, who Halen is before they fight him, and what the Telos actually believe in depth.

The Codex rewards curiosity. It does not demand it.

Discovery over dumping

Entries unlock through play — stage clears, boss defeats, NPC transmissions, specific loadout choices, endless depth milestones — not through a single "you unlocked the lore dump" event. The player discovers lore at the pace of the campaign. No entry is available before its moment is earned.

Readability

Every entry is short. Maximum length is 300 words. Most entries are 80–150 words. The Codex is not a wiki — it is a field record. Written as if by a Coalition intelligence analyst, a Veiled scholar, or a recovered personal log. The voice shifts per category.

10 XP per discovery

Each entry grants 10 Pilot XP on first discovery. At ~170 entries, completing the Codex contributes ~1,700 XP — modest but meaningful, spread across the full gameplay lifecycle.

Discovery Engine

secret Unlocks through hidden interaction (see hidden achievement conditions) H-11 "The Empty Stage" → unlocks a hidden entry

Unlock Notification

When an entry unlocks:

  • During gameplay: slim toast notification ("Codex updated — [entry name]"), non-intrusive
  • At hub: the Codex tab displays a notification pip with the count of unread entries
  • Entries remain permanently in the Codex once unlocked; they cannot be lost

Reading State

Each entry has two states: Unread (unlocked but not opened) and Read (opened at least once). The achievement tracker counts all unlocked entries, not just read ones. But a separate "read" indicator in the UI gently nudges the player toward unread content.

Category 1 — The Telos (25 entries)

Voice: Coalition intelligence analyst. Neutral, precise, occasionally unsettled.

Entry Unlock Trigger Summary
T-01 The Telos — Overview stage_clear(1) What the Telos are: a human-derived religious civilization, 600 years separated from Earth contact, organized entirely around the Quantum Rise doctrine. Population estimate: ~80 billion across 14 star systems.
T-02 The Quantum Rise stage_clear(3) The central doctrine: the current vacuum state is sub-optimal; a controlled false vacuum decay event will transition all matter to a higher-energy ground state. The Telos call this the Crossing. They call it mercy.
T-03 The Liturgical Hierarchy stage_clear(4) The Telos organizational structure: Adherents (laity) → Cantors → Inquisitors → Mathematician-Saints → Architect-Saints. Only Architect-Saints have full technical access to the Apparatus doctrine.
T-04 The Apparatus — Doctrine stage_clear(6) The Telos's theological name for their vacuum-decay device. Not merely a weapon — a sacred instrument. The Apparatus does not destroy; it completes. This is the distinction they insist on.
T-05 Telos Ship Design enemy_kill(G3, 20) Telos hulls are liturgical artifacts. Hull geometry follows sacred mathematical proportions. Prayer scripts are procedurally generated from each ship's construction date and the name of the presiding cantor.
T-06 The Choir of Names stage_clear(9) The Telos sub-order responsible for naming all things. Every ship, weapon, operation, and pilot in the Telos military is given a liturgical name by the Choir. The Veiled schism originated partly from a naming dispute.
T-07 Telos Bullet Doctrine enemy_kill(Sn1, 5) Telos firing patterns are not tactical — they are liturgical. Formations perform mathematical proof-structures in motion. A mandala formation is a recited theorem. Inquisitor snipers fire in precise alternation to produce a specific temporal rhythm considered sacred.
T-08 The Inquisitors stage_clear(12) The Telos enforcement order. Anti-apostate specialists. Their weapons are tuned specifically to damage Veiled-derived technology. Theologically, they are not warriors — they are surgeons, excising heresy.
T-09 The Adherents enemy_kill(G1, 50) The majority of Telos combatants are Adherents — true believers, not conscripts. They do not fight for territorial gain. They fight because the Crossing is a kindness and humanity has refused to accept it. This is the hardest part for Coalition pilots to understand.
T-10 Telos Theology of Death stage_clear(14) In Telos theology, individual death is not tragedy — it is premature Crossing. A pilot who dies in battle has simply Crossed before the general Crossing arrives. Grief is considered a spiritual failure in orthodox Telos communities.
T-11 The Quantum Rise — Science weapon_built(W5) The physics underlying the Quantum Rise doctrine. The Telos interpretation of quantum field theory vacuum states is not entirely wrong — false vacuum decay is a real theoretical risk. Their error is in believing the decay can be controlled and that the post-decay state is survivable. It is not.
T-12 The Great Commission stage_clear(15) The founding text of the Telos military mission. Issued by the first Architect-Saint approximately 340 years before the current war. Its final line, translated: "We do not conquer. We complete."
T-13 Telos Shipyards stage_clear(17) The Telos construct ships as religious acts. Each shipyard is consecrated ground. The workers are ordained. The fabrication process follows a liturgical calendar — certain hull components may only be assembled during specific astronomical events.
T-14 The Mathematician-Saints stage_clear(20) The Telos scientific-theological order. They maintain the Apparatus's technical systems and continuously recalculate the optimal deployment conditions. They do not believe in uncertainty — they believe their calculations are correct because the universe wants to be Crossed.
T-15 Telos Communication Protocols npc_transmission(stage9_veiled_contact) Telos command communications are encoded in liturgical cipher. The key changes on a theological calendar. Coalition intelligence broke the third-generation cipher; the Telos responded by adding a theological commentary layer no algorithm has yet decoded.
T-16 The Telos Calendar codex_chain(T-03) The Telos mark time from the founding of the Quantum Rise doctrine, not from Earth-standard dating. Year 1 of the Telos calendar corresponds approximately to Earth year 2098. The current war is, by Telos reckoning, occurring in their Year 842.
T-17 Telos Elite Units enemy_kill(E1, 10) Elite Telos units receive personal liturgical names. Their hulls are hand-inscribed by a Choir of Names representative. Each elite is, in Telos theology, a sacred instrument — not merely a soldier.
T-18 The Telos View of Matter codex_chain(T-02) The Telos do not consider baryonic matter sacred. They consider it unfinished. The current vacuum state is, in their theology, a sketch — not the completed work. Matter as it currently exists is a draft that the Crossing will perfect. This is the precise inversion of the Coalition's Tao of the Baryon.
T-19 Telos Surrender Protocol stage_clear(22) There is no Telos surrender protocol. Coalition analysts initially believed this was military doctrine. Recovered Veiled testimony indicates it is theological. You cannot surrender the mercy you are offering.
T-20 The Penrose Liturgy weapon_built(W5) The Telos theology surrounding the Apparatus's use of the Penrose process. In Telos sacred texts, the black hole is a natural sacrament — a place where the old universe has already begun its Crossing. The Apparatus simply helps the rest of reality follow.
T-21 Telos Music codex_chain(T-07) The Telos maintain a continuous choral tradition. Every fleet carries cantors whose sole duty is to sing during battle. The singing is not morale — it is theology. The battle is a liturgy. The bullets are the words.
T-22 The Telos Name for Us stage_clear(25) The Telos liturgical name for humanity, translated: "Those who are afraid of completion." They mean this with compassion.
T-23 Telos Post-Crossing Theology codex_chain(T-11) What the Telos believe will exist after the Crossing. Not nothing — they are specific about this. A higher-energy vacuum state supports, in their theology, a form of existence they cannot describe in current physics. They call it the clarified state.
T-24 The Apparatus — Construction History boss_defeat(voren) The Apparatus took 210 years to build. Seventeen generations of Mathematician-Saints contributed to its design. The current Architect-Saint Halen has overseen its final phase for the last 47 years. He has outlived six Telos political administrations.
T-25 The Telos Civil Record codex_chain(T-16) A summary of Telos civilian life recovered from captured data stores. The Telos civilian population is educated, literate, and deeply invested in the Quantum Rise. Support for the Crossing is not manufactured — it is genuine, multigenerational, and culturally total. The Coalition has no propaganda strategy that addresses this.

Category 2 — The Veiled (20 entries)

Voice: Personal, reflective, sometimes in first-person fragments from Veiled testimony.

Entry Unlock Trigger Summary
V-01 The Veiled — Overview npc_transmission(stage9_veiled_contact) Who the Veiled are: Telos heretics who concluded that the Quantum Rise doctrine's physics are incorrect and the Crossing will not produce the clarified state — it will produce nothing. They defected rather than participate in what they believe is universal murder.
V-02 The Schism stage_clear(11) The Veiled schism began 90 years before the current war with a paper by a Mathematician-Saint named Oreth, who published calculations showing the post-decay state would not be survivable. He was excommunicated within 48 hours. His followers became the first Veiled.
V-03 Achernar Station stage_clear(13) The Veiled's primary base of operations in Coalition space. A converted Telos supply station, stripped of liturgical markings, staffed by Veiled engineers and their families. It does not look like a war station. It looks like a small city that is frightened and working very hard.
V-04 Veiled Technology stage_clear(13) The Veiled brought Telos engineering knowledge when they defected. Their weapon designs are more sophisticated than anything the Coalition had independently developed. The Coalition was 60–80 years behind in several key areas.
V-05 The Choir of Names — Veiled Faction codex_chain(T-06) A sub-faction of the Choir of Names that defected with the Veiled. They continue naming practices but have revised the naming theology: things are named for what they are, not what the Crossing will make them. The distinction is considered radical by orthodox Telos.
V-06 Veiled Theology stage_clear(14) The Veiled are not atheists. They believe in the sacred character of matter — specifically, that baryonic matter in its current state is the actual sacred object, not a draft to be perfected. They arrived at this position through physics, not intuition. Oreth's calculations led him to the Tao of the Baryon before the Coalition named it.
V-07 The Price of Defection stage_clear(15) What the Veiled gave up. Full citizenship in a civilization of 80 billion people. Families in many cases. In some cases, children who did not follow. The Inquisitors track and execute apostate Veiled wherever they are found. Every Veiled at Achernar Station has a specific Inquisitor assigned to their case file.
V-08 Veiled Family Structure npc_transmission(stage15_sira_vel) The Veiled maintain family units even in exile. Achernar Station has a school. It has a small park. It has a Choir-of-Names ceremony for naming newborns, conducted under revised liturgy. The Veiled are not refugees waiting to go home. They have made a home.
V-09 The Veiled Military Capacity stage_clear(16) The Veiled cannot fight a war. They do not have the numbers. What they have is intelligence, schematics, and pilots willing to fly into Telos space as guides. Their military contribution is asymmetric: they are force-multipliers, not a force.
V-10 Sira-Vel's Role codex_chain(V-01) Sira-Vel is not a soldier. Her title among the Veiled translates approximately as "interface coordinator" — a person whose function is to make the Veiled comprehensible to outsiders. She was chosen because she is better at this than anyone else alive. She dislikes the title.
V-11 The Veiled View of Halen stage_clear(20) Among the Veiled, Architect-Saint Halen is a complicated figure. He was Oreth's contemporary. He read Oreth's calculations before the excommunication. He understood them. He chose the Apparatus anyway. Some Veiled hate him. Others — including Veth — still grieve him.
V-12 Veiled Communication Methods stage_clear(18) The Veiled communicate in a revised liturgical cipher derived from the same base as Telos encryption. Coalition intelligence initially believed this was a vulnerability. It is not — the Veiled have rotated the cipher 14 times since their defection and never been broken by either side.
V-13 The Apostate's Prayer codex_chain(V-06) A Veiled prayer composed by Oreth in the first year of exile. Translated: "We did not leave because we stopped believing. We left because we believed more carefully. May the matter we are made of forgive us for the argument we are having in its name."
V-14 Veiled Naming Practices codex_chain(V-05) Veiled names are two-word constructions: a physical property plus a relationship. Sira-Vel: "still-water, toward." Architect-Veth: Veth declined to translate his own Veiled name when asked. He said only: "It was given before I earned it. I am working on deserving it."
V-15 The Witnesses boss_defeat(maelin) A Veiled order whose function is to observe and record. They do not fight. They do not advise. In every major engagement, a Witness vessel is present, recording. The Telos consider this heretical. The Coalition considers it unsettling. The Veiled consider it necessary: "Someone must remember what happened here, regardless of outcome."
V-16 Veiled Grief Practices codex_chain(V-07) The Veiled mourn differently than the Telos. The Telos do not mourn — death is Crossing. The Veiled mourn extensively. A Veiled who dies is commemorated for thirty days. Their name is added to a public record. Sira-Vel maintains the record manually. There are 3,847 names on it.
V-17 Veiled Children codex_chain(V-08) Approximately 400 children live at Achernar Station. They have been born in exile. They have never been to Telos space. They are, in every meaningful sense, not Telos — they are a new people. The Choir of Names gave them a collective liturgical designation: "The Born-After."
V-18 Veiled-Coalition Relations stage_clear(19) The relationship is complicated. The Coalition needs the Veiled's technical knowledge. The Veiled need the Coalition's military capacity. Both parties know this and have structured their cooperation as a formal alliance with specific obligations. Sira-Vel negotiated every clause personally.
V-19 The Defection Events codex_chain(V-02) The primary Veiled defection occurred in three waves over six years. The first wave was scholars. The second was engineers. The third was families who followed when it became clear the first two waves were not coming back. Each wave triggered increased Inquisitor activity in Telos civilian space.
V-20 What the Veiled Want boss_defeat(halen) Asked directly, Sira-Vel's answer is consistent: "We want the Apparatus not to fire. We do not want to go home. Home decided to end the universe. We built a different home. We want it to continue existing. That is all."

Category 3 — The Coalition (22 entries)

Voice: Official report style. Coalition military and political documentation.

Entry Unlock Trigger Summary
Co-01 The Coalition — Overview stage_clear(1) The human interstellar government. ~12 billion citizens across 8 star systems. A representative federation with a standing military, formed initially for trade coordination and expanded to military capacity after first Telos contact 80 years ago.
Co-02 First Contact with the Telos stage_clear(2) First contact record. Coalition survey vessel detected Telos signals 82 years before the current war. First physical encounter: a Telos fleet performing what was later determined to be a liturgical patrol. No hostile action at first contact. The Telos transmitted a greeting. The greeting, translated 12 years later, was an invitation to Cross.
Co-03 The Tao of the Baryon pilot_rank(3) The Coalition's counter-doctrine to the Quantum Rise. Formulated by a civilian philosopher 40 years before the war and adopted by Coalition military leadership as a unifying ideological framework. Core argument: baryonic matter in its current state is not unfinished — it is what it is, and that is enough. The name was chosen to suggest simplicity: the way of matter.
Co-04 Coalition Military Structure stage_clear(3) Overview of Coalition military organization. Frontier Command (border patrol), Deep-Reach Command (extended operations), and the Veil Operations Group (the unit the player belongs to, formed after the Veiled alliance).
Co-05 Achernar Station — Coalition Record stage_clear(13) The Coalition's official record of Achernar Station. Classified: Tier 3. Notes the Veiled population, estimated technical value, and a risk assessment that reads, uncharacteristically: "We cannot afford to lose these people."
Co-06 Coalition Ship Design ship_built(H1) Human ships are built for function. No liturgical requirements. No sacred proportions. Quality varies by shipyard; the Vanguard-class was designed by committee and reflects this. The Veiled engineers' first assessment of Coalition ship design was: "You are very brave to fly these."
Co-07 The Frontier War stage_clear(4) The military conflict before the player's campaign. 12 years of Frontier patrol engagements. Neither side made territorial gains. The Telos were not trying to conquer — they were maneuvering the Apparatus into deployment range. The Coalition did not understand this for eight of those twelve years.
Co-08 Coalition Intelligence Failures stage_clear(7) A partial declassified summary of Coalition intelligence failures. The Apparatus was identified as a construction project 22 years before the current campaign. Its purpose was misclassified as a propulsion system. The analyst who correctly identified it as a weapon was overruled three times.
Co-09 Veil Operations Group stage_clear(13) The joint Coalition-Veiled operational unit the player commands within. Formed after the Veiled alliance. Approximately 2,400 personnel. The unit has no liturgical identity — it is the most purely functional military unit in either civilization. Sira-Vel insisted on this.
Co-10 Coalition War Policy stage_clear(15) The Coalition's stated war policy: prevent Apparatus deployment. Not conquest, not regime change, not ideological conversion. The Telos believe what they believe. The Coalition's goal is to ensure they cannot act on it.
Co-11 The Energy Problem weapon_built(W5) The Coalition's energy infrastructure was not designed for a sustained interstellar war. Before the Veiled alliance, Coalition propulsion technology was 40 years behind Telos. The Penrose Lance and related Veiled-derived technology have partially closed this gap.
Co-12 Coalition Civilian Support pilot_rank(12) Civilian support for the war is high but not uniform. The core challenge: the Telos are offering something that sounds, to uninformed ears, like transcendence. Coalition public messaging has focused on the "nothing survives" physics — that the clarified state is not existence, it is absence. Results mixed.
Co-13 Veil Operations — Rules of Engagement stage_clear(16) The Coalition's rules of engagement in Veiled-assisted operations. Notable clause: Coalition forces will not deploy any technology that permanently alters physical constants, vacuum states, or spacetime topology, regardless of tactical advantage. This clause was added at Sira-Vel's insistence. The Coalition accepted it without debate.
Co-14 Coalition Pilot Training pilot_rank(8) Standard Coalition pilot training is 18 months. The player's character, as a Frontier Commander, has completed advanced command training on top of this. The Veil Operations Group has an additional 6-month integration program covering Veiled technology and cultural context.
Co-15 Post-War Planning stage_clear(24) The Coalition has a post-war planning directorate. Their primary open question: what happens to the 80 billion Telos civilians if the Apparatus is destroyed and the war ends? Coalition policy does not have a clear answer. Sira-Vel has opinions, which she has submitted formally and which remain under review.
Co-16 Anomaly Field — Debate weapon_built(W6) The internal Coalition debate over the Anomaly Field weapon. The field locally modifies physical constants — some Coalition ethicists argued this was too similar to the Apparatus principle. The debate was resolved by Sira-Vel's distinction: altering local constants is not altering the vacuum state. It is bending the law, not tearing up the book.
Co-17 Coalition Medals and Honors achievement_unlock(C-06) The Coalition's military honor system. The highest decoration is the Tao Star — awarded for actions that preserved human existence against existential threat. Only 3 have been issued in 80 years of war. The Veil Operations Group record suggests a 4th may be warranted.
Co-18 Coalition-Veiled Legal Framework stage_clear(18) The formal treaty governing the Coalition-Veiled alliance. 47 clauses. Sira-Vel drafted 31 of them. The Coalition's lead negotiator later wrote in his memoirs: "She was better at this than anyone I have ever encountered. I believe she had already anticipated every position we were going to take."
Co-19 Coalition Research Programs codex_chain(Co-11) A summary of Coalition military R&D programs running parallel to the Veil Operations campaign. The C-Series ship designs emerged from this research. The Penrose Lance required Veiled engineering collaboration that the Coalition could not have produced independently in under 20 years.
Co-20 Coalition Casualties stage_clear(22) Running total: 847,000 Coalition military deaths over 80 years of Telos conflict. The Veiled hold a separate record for their own losses, which they have not shared with Coalition command. Sira-Vel says only: "Ours is longer than yours, per capita."
Co-21 The Frontier Command Record stage_clear(6) A summary of Frontier Command operations over 12 years. Notable entry: the Frontier has never been breached. The Telos have not attempted to breach it — they have been routing around it while the Apparatus reaches deployment range. Frontier Command is winning a war no one is fighting.
Co-22 Coalition Senate Debate — Transcript codex_chain(Co-12) A declassified fragment of a Coalition Senate session debating the Veiled alliance. Senator Ahriman-Voss: "We are being asked to trust people who were, until recently, trying to end the universe." Senate President Darika-Chen: "They stopped. We should acknowledge that."

Category 4 — Key Figures (28 entries)

Voice: Biographical, intelligence-profile style. Some entries shift to first-person excerpts.

Entry Unlock Trigger Summary
KF-01 Sira-Vel npc_transmission(stage3_first) Primary Veiled liaison. Background, role, personality summary. "She does not ask for things she cannot get. She has never asked for anything she did not get."
KF-02 Sira-Vel — The Defection stage_clear(13) Sira-Vel's personal defection story. She was a Choir of Names senior representative. She left in the second wave, bringing the full Choir-of-Names archive — the complete record of every name ever given by the Choir. The Telos consider this the greatest theft in their history.
KF-03 Sira-Vel — Achernar npc_transmission(stage15_sira_vel) Sira-Vel's role in building Achernar Station. She arrived at the Coalition with 340 people and a detailed construction proposal. She had written it during the transit. The Coalition approved it because no one could find a flaw in the logistics.
KF-04 Architect-Veth stage_clear(13) Overview of Architect-Veth. Former Telos Mathematician-Saint, now the Veiled's lead engineering contributor. Designer of the Penrose Lance, the Anomaly Field concept, and the Halen-Class Module. Was Halen's apprentice for 19 years.
KF-05 Veth — The Apprenticeship codex_chain(KF-04) The 19 years Veth spent under Halen's instruction. By Veth's account: "He taught me everything I know about the Penrose process. He also taught me that certainty is a tool, not a virtue. He used it as a tool. I could not."
KF-06 Veth — The Departure stage_clear(16) Why Veth left. He completed Oreth's calculations independently in his 12th year under Halen. He showed them to Halen. Halen read them, was silent for four seconds, then resumed working. Veth waited three months, then left. He has never been certain whether Halen's silence meant he understood or refused to.
KF-07 Veth — Current Work weapon_built(W5) Veth's engineering output since joining the Veiled. The Penrose Lance was his first Coalition contribution: "It felt appropriate to take what he taught me and turn it into something that defends rather than ends." The Halen-Class Module was his last. He will not say why it was last.
KF-08 Architect-Saint Halen — Public Record stage_clear(20) The Coalition's intelligence profile of Halen. 847 years old (uploaded consciousness). Former lead designer of the Apparatus. Last human contact 47 years ago. Classified: highest threat.
KF-09 Halen — The Early Years stage_clear(22) Halen before the upload. Born in standard Telos circumstances, showed mathematical aptitude at 9 years old, was identified by the Mathematician-Saints at 14, and spent the next 60 years becoming the foremost Telos physicist of his generation.
KF-10 Halen — The Upload codex_chain(KF-09) The decision to upload Halen's consciousness into the Apparatus. In Telos theology, this was not merely practical — it was consecration. The Apparatus would be completed by housing a living mind within it. Halen volunteered. He was 800 years old in biological equivalent when the upload occurred.
KF-11 Halen — Mira-Veris codex_chain(KF-10) Halen's wife. Died 230 years before the campaign, before the upload decision was made. Halen kept her name in the Apparatus core registry. The registry entry reads simply: "Mira-Veris. Remembered."
KF-12 Halen — His Children codex_chain(KF-11) Halen's three children: Tara, Lorin, Anthel. All died of natural causes within the last 400 years. Tara was a Mathematician-Saint. Lorin was a Cantor. Anthel left the Telos and lived as a civilian — the only member of the family who questioned the Apparatus. Halen attended her funeral via remote transmission. It was the last time his voice was recorded before the upload.
KF-13 Halen — Post-Upload Transmissions stage_clear(25) A record of Halen's transmissions since upload. 847 years of continuous consciousness. The early transmissions are indistinguishable from his pre-upload voice. The most recent transmissions are something else — coherent, but vast in a way human speech is not designed to be.
KF-14 Halen — What He Believes stage_clear(28) The Coalition's best assessment of Halen's genuine motivation. He is not performing doctrine. He believes the Crossing is the completion of the universe. He has believed this for 800 years. He has had 847 years of uninterrupted thought to become more certain. His certainty is not arrogance — it is the logical result of a very long time with nothing to contradict him.
KF-15 The Reverent Maelin boss_defeat(maelin) Biographical entry for the Stage 6 boss. Ace pilot, 34 years active service, psalm inscribed on hull in his own handwriting. His call sign in Telos records: "The First Verse." Personal log fragment recovered: "They keep not Crossing. I keep not understanding why."
KF-16 Final Chorus — Components boss_defeat(final_chorus) The four-ship formation that constitutes the Stage 12 boss. Each ship is an independent ace pilot; the formation itself has a liturgical name — "the first chord of the Crossing hymn." Two of the four pilots are siblings.
KF-17 The Inquisitor Cohort boss_defeat(inquisitor) The Stage 18 boss unit. The Inquisitor Cohort is not a military unit in standard terms — it is a theological enforcement squad. Their weapons are specifically calibrated to damage Veiled-derived technology. Their primary assignment is apostasy, not war. The player is the highest-priority target they have ever received.
KF-18 Mathematician-Saint Voren stage_clear(22) Pre-combat intelligence profile on Voren. 340 years old. Calculated the Apparatus deployment window to a precision of 4 significant figures. Has been transmitting during the Stage 19–24 engagement, patiently explaining the elegance of his calculations to anyone on the Coalition frequency. He does not seem to understand why this might be uncomfortable.
KF-19 Voren — The Transmissions boss_defeat(voren) A compilation of Voren's pre-combat transmissions, translated. "The mathematics are very beautiful. I wish you could appreciate them from outside your fear. Perhaps in the clarified state, you will. I hope you find it peaceful." Analysts note: he means this kindly.
KF-20 Voren — Defeat boss_defeat(voren) Post-engagement intelligence note on Voren's defeat. His final transmission: "The calculation persists even when the calculator does not. Remember that." The Apparatus continued operating without him. He was correct about this.
KF-21 Oreth — The First Dissenter codex_chain(V-02) The Mathematician-Saint who first published the calculations proving the post-decay state was not survivable. Dead 90 years. Considered a saint by the Veiled; considered a heretic by the Telos. His calculations have been independently verified by every Veiled mathematician since. The Telos have not published a formal refutation — they have published an excommunication.
KF-22 The Unnamed Analyst codex_chain(Co-08) The Coalition intelligence analyst who correctly identified the Apparatus as a weapon 22 years before the campaign. Her name has been redacted from the declassified record per her request. Her summary, unredacted: "This is a machine for ending the universe. Please read the second page before you classify this report." They did not read the second page.
KF-23 Sira-Vel — Personal Log Fragment npc_transmission(stage25_sira_vel) A Sira-Vel personal log entry, shared voluntarily. "I have been asked if I miss home. The question assumes home still exists in the form I would miss. It does not. I built a different one. I miss the stars from the window I had as a child. The stars are the same. That is enough."
KF-24 Veth — Letter (Unsent) achievement_unlock(H-10) An unsent letter from Veth, recovered from his private files. Addressed to Halen. The text is not reproduced in the Codex at Veth's request. The entry notes only: "He wrote it. He reads it sometimes. He has not sent it." The achievement that unlocks this entry is the one where the player stops firing and lets Veth's apology reach Halen clearly.
KF-25 The Player Character — Field Record stage_clear(30) Sira-Vel's after-action report on the player character's full campaign. The entry is addressed to them directly. It ends: "You flew into the Apparatus and came back. The Witnesses have recorded this. The Choir of Names has given you a name. I am not authorized to tell you what it is. Ask them, if you reach depth 500."
KF-26 Coalition Field Commander Profile pilot_rank(10) Standard Coalition biography template for a Veil Operations Group commander. Most fields: filled with player's campaign statistics. Field "Notes": blank except for a single line added by hand that reads: "Does not stop."
KF-27 Halen — Final Transmission Text boss_defeat(halen) The full text of Halen's final transmission from Stage 30. Reproduced in the Codex as a primary source. Signed: "Halen-Veris, Architect-Saint, Final Transmission."
KF-28 What Veth Said After codex_chain(KF-27) Veth's statement given to the Witnesses 48 hours after the Apparatus fell. A single paragraph. The last line: "I do not know if he understood, at the end, that we were not refusing him out of fear. We were refusing him out of love for the thing he had stopped being able to see. I hope I find a way to tell him. I do not know where to send the letter."

Category 5 — The Apparatus & Physics (22 entries)

Voice: Scientific. Coalition physics team briefings, occasionally Veth's annotations.

Entry Unlock Trigger Summary
AP-01 False Vacuum Decay stage_clear(3) The real physics. The quantum field theoretic concept of metastable vacuum states. The possibility that the universe's current vacuum state is not the lowest-energy state. If a true vacuum bubble nucleates, it expands at the speed of light and cannot be stopped.
AP-02 The Penrose Process weapon_built(W5) Roger Penrose's 1969 theoretical mechanism for extracting rotational energy from a Kerr black hole's ergosphere. Real physics, proposed as a civilizational energy source. The Telos applied it as the Apparatus's power source. The Coalition adapted it into the Penrose Lance.
AP-03 Hawking Radiation weapon_built(W4) Stephen Hawking's 1974 theoretical prediction. Black holes are not perfectly black — quantum effects near the event horizon allow energy to escape. Smaller black holes evaporate faster and end in a burst. The Hawking Bolt is named for this.
AP-04 Gravitational Lensing stage_clear(19) General relativity's prediction that massive objects bend light. Explains the visual distortions in Sector 4 backgrounds and the lensed bullet type. Not a Telos weapon — a physics phenomenon. The Apparatus's gravitational influence is strong enough to produce it visually.
AP-05 Cosmic Strings stage_clear(25) Hypothetical 1D topological defects from the early universe. Tom Kibble's 1976 theoretical proposal. If they exist, they have immense linear energy density. Searches for their signatures in cosmic microwave background data are ongoing. The Sector 5 hazard is a simulation, not a real string. The real thing would end the engagement.
AP-06 Time Dilation stage_clear(19) General relativistic time dilation near massive objects. Clocks run slower in stronger gravitational fields. The Sector 4 time-dilated zones are regions where Tartarus-9's gravitational influence measurably affects time flow. Not lore-fiction — real physics applied to the engagement zone.
AP-07 Tartarus-9 stage_clear(21) The black hole at the center of the Apparatus. A rotating Kerr black hole, mass approximately 40 solar masses. The Telos selected it for the Penrose process. It has an ergosphere — a region outside the event horizon where rotation drags spacetime. The Apparatus is built around and within this ergosphere.
AP-08 The Ergosphere stage_clear(19) The region around a rotating black hole where spacetime is dragged so forcefully that nothing — not even light — can remain stationary. The Apparatus is built to function within this zone. Sector 4's name is a direct reference.
AP-09 Vacuum States codex_chain(AP-01) A more detailed overview of quantum field theoretic vacuum states. Why the current state might be metastable. How a phase transition would propagate. Coalition physics team annotation: "The Telos are not wrong about the physics. They are wrong about what comes after. The distinction is everything."
AP-10 Boltzmann Brains depth_reached(100) Ludwig Boltzmann's late statistical-mechanics thought experiment. In a sufficiently high-entropy universe, random thermal fluctuations could spontaneously produce ordered structures — including, theoretically, conscious minds. The Boltzmann Cascade weapon and the Boltzmann Construct endless-mode enemy both reference this concept.
AP-11 Quantum Tunneling ship_built(V2) The quantum mechanical phenomenon where particles pass through energy barriers they classically should not be able to cross. Real physics. The V-2 Phantom's Phase Shift special ability is a heavily extrapolated technological application of this concept.
AP-12 Cherenkov Radiation codex_chain(AP-09) The electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle travels through a medium faster than light travels through that medium. Produces a characteristic blue glow — visible in nuclear reactors. The Cherenkov Burst special ability is named for this effect.
AP-13 Varying Physical Constants weapon_built(W6) The real scientific question of whether physical constants (fine-structure constant, speed of light in vacuum, etc.) vary across spacetime or over time. Webb et al. observational data from quasar spectra. The Anomaly Field weapon is based on a technological extrapolation of this concept.
AP-14 Spaghettification codex_chain(AP-07) The tidal stretching effect near a black hole's event horizon. Objects are stretched into thin strands by differential gravitational forces. The player ship's death animation near gravitational hazards references this.
AP-15 The Apparatus — Engineering Overview boss_defeat(voren) Technical specification of the Apparatus as understood by Coalition and Veiled physicists. Scale: approximately 2.3 solar radii in cross-section. Power source: Tartarus-9 Penrose extraction. Estimated yield: sufficient to nucleate a false vacuum decay bubble propagating at c. No known containment method once deployed.
AP-16 The Apparatus — Control System stage_clear(26) The Apparatus's control architecture. Halen's uploaded consciousness is not merely housed in the Apparatus — it is the Apparatus's primary control system. His mind runs the deployment sequence. Without him, the Apparatus cannot fire. This is why he is the final target.
AP-17 The Bleed-Through Phenomenon depth_reached(200) The physics degradation observed in the Apparatus's immediate vicinity. The Apparatus has been operating in test mode for 12 years, leaking exotic fields into surrounding space. In the deepest endless depths, physics is genuinely altered — not as a game mechanic, but as an in-universe fact.
AP-18 Roche Limit stage_clear(20) The distance from a massive body within which tidal forces exceed an object's own gravitational self-binding — it breaks apart. Explains the Sector 4 asteroid hazard. Real astrophysics.
AP-19 The Krasnikov Drive pilot_rank(9) A speculative spacetime manipulation drive proposed theoretically in 1995. The Coalition sector-transition animations are based on this concept: the ship creates a distortion in spacetime behind it, allowing faster-than-light travel without violating causality locally.
AP-20 Physics of the Upload codex_chain(KF-10) The Telos's theoretical framework for consciousness uploading. Coalition physicists' assessment: the process is technically coherent in broad strokes. The specific implementation in Halen's case remains unknown — the Veiled have not seen it documented. Veth will not discuss it.
AP-21 Magnetic Confinement ship_built(H3) The physics of confining plasma using magnetic fields. Real-world application: tokamak fusion reactors. In-game application: the Coherence Field special ability and the shield visualization.
AP-22 The Post-Apparatus Question boss_defeat(halen) What happens to Tartarus-9 after the Apparatus is destroyed. Coalition physics team assessment: the black hole is unchanged. The Penrose extraction structures will decay over hundreds of years. Tartarus-9 will continue rotating for approximately 10^67 years. The universe is patient.

Category 6 — The War (18 entries)

Voice: Military historical. Coalition war record, occasionally intercepted Telos operational documents.

Entry Unlock Trigger Summary
W-01 Eighty Years of Conflict stage_clear(1) An overview of the 80-year conflict timeline. Three phases: first contact and diplomatic failure (years 1–15), frontier conflict (years 15–68), and the Apparatus campaign (years 68–present).
W-02 The Diplomatic Failure stage_clear(2) What happened when the Coalition tried to negotiate with the Telos. 12 years of exchanges. The fundamental problem: the Telos were not withholding the Crossing out of hostility — they were offering it as a gift. No negotiation framework handles an adversary who wants to give you something you don't want.
W-03 The Frontier War — Timeline stage_clear(4) A stage-by-stage timeline of the 53-year Frontier conflict. Key finding: the Telos never attempted a territorial breakthrough. In retrospect, they were stalling — the Apparatus needed 53 more years of construction. The Coalition was winning a war that wasn't happening.
W-04 The Veiled Alliance — Impact stage_clear(14) Before the Veiled alliance, Coalition command estimated an 8% probability of stopping the Apparatus. After: 34%. The change came entirely from Veiled intelligence about the Apparatus's control architecture — specifically, that it requires Halen's active participation.
W-05 Operation Long Reach stage_clear(10) The Coalition's first deep-penetration operation into Telos space. Used Veiled guides. Destroyed three Telos supply depots. Lost 40% of the strike force. Considered a success.
W-06 The Inquisitor Campaign stage_clear(16) The Telos's counter-operation: deploying Inquisitor units specifically to target Veiled personnel attached to Coalition forces. Resulted in 23 Veiled deaths in 18 months. Sira-Vel added all 23 to the public record. She read all 23 names aloud at the next Coalition command briefing.
W-07 Battle of the Long Reach boss_defeat(final_chorus) The engagement in which the Final Chorus (Stage 12 boss) was deployed. The first time the Coalition encountered a multi-ship liturgical formation boss structure. Prior doctrine assumed individual ace pilot threats. The After-Action Report revised the threat model entirely.
W-08 The Veil Incursion stage_clear(17) The first Coalition operation inside what the Telos consider their sacred space — Sector 3, The Veil. Coalition command was uncertain. Sira-Vel was not: "We are not invading their home. We are entering territory where they are preparing to end ours."
W-09 Ergosphere Approach stage_clear(21) The Coalition's strategic approach to the Ergosphere zone. Named for the real physics — the region where Tartarus-9's rotation begins to meaningfully affect operations. First entered by Veil Operations Group, Stage 19.
W-10 Losses at the Ergosphere stage_clear(23) Coalition casualties in Sector 4 operations. Highest single-operation loss rate of the campaign. The Apparatus Guardian elites were deployed here for the first time. Pre-engagement intelligence had not anticipated adaptive AI targeting.
W-11 The Apparatus — Final Approach stage_clear(25) Strategic overview of the Sector 5 campaign. The Coalition's final push to reach and destroy the Apparatus before deployment. Three of seven Coalition command staff believed the mission was impossible. The other four did not disagree, but noted there was no alternative.
W-12 Halen's First Transmission stage_clear(26) The first time Halen addressed the player character directly (Stage 26). Coalition communications noted a change in his transmission pattern — prior transmissions addressed "Coalition forces" generically. Stage 26 transmission addressed the Commander by rank. He knows who is coming.
W-13 The Apparatus Deployment Window boss_defeat(voren) Voren's calculation, recovered and verified by Veiled mathematicians: the Apparatus has a 14-day optimal deployment window beginning in 18 days from the start of Stage 25. Missing the window delays deployment by 11 years. The campaign timeline is defined by this calculation.
W-14 Stage 30 — After-Action Report stage_clear(30) The official Coalition after-action report on the Stage 30 engagement. Classification: Tier 1 (most sensitive). The report notes, unusually for a military document: "The Commander did not accept the premise of the engagement. They flew into a god and came back. We are revising our doctrine accordingly."
W-15 Telos Response to Apparatus Loss boss_defeat(halen) Coalition intelligence summary of Telos military response in the 72 hours after the Apparatus fell. No aggressive action. The Telos fleet held position for 11 hours, then began withdrawing. The Choir of Names transmitted continuously for 8 of those 11 hours. The transmission is still being translated.
W-16 The Ceasefire codex_chain(W-15) 9 days after Stage 30, the Telos transmitted a ceasefire request. The first ceasefire request in 80 years. Coalition command accepted it within 4 hours. Sira-Vel's response, when informed: "Good. Now the hard part."
W-17 The Hard Part codex_chain(W-16) An unclassified summary of Coalition planning for post-ceasefire engagement with the Telos. 80 billion people whose entire civilization was organized around a doctrine that no longer has an instrument. The Coalition has 14 active committees studying this. None of them have contacted the Veiled. Sira-Vel has noted this.
W-18 The Witnesses' Record achievement_unlock(H-02) The Witnesses' post-campaign record of the engagement. It is not a military history. It is a list of names — every person on every side who died in the Sector 5 campaign. Coalition names, Telos names, Veiled names. In the Witnesses' tradition: the dead are not separated by faction. They are listed in the order they died.

Category 7 — Ships & Weapons (18 entries)

Voice: Technical specifications, engineering notes, occasionally with a dry wit.

Each major ship and weapon has a technical codex entry unlocking when it is first built, plus supplementary entries for advanced systems.

Entry Unlock Trigger Summary
SW-01 H-1 Vanguard — Design Notes ship_built(H1) Engineering history of the Vanguard. Designed by committee. Revised 14 times. The most-produced Coalition warship. The Veiled engineers' assessment: "It works because there is nothing wrong with it. That is not the same as it being good."
SW-02 H-2 Interceptor — Design Notes ship_built(H2) The Interceptor's origins in the early Frontier War. Built to engage Telos light fighters that were 30% faster than anything the Coalition had. The speed was achieved by removing every non-essential system. The pilot ejection mechanism was considered non-essential.
SW-03 H-3 Bulwark — Design Notes ship_built(H3) The Bulwark was designed by a Coalition engineer who had survived 4 Telos elite engagements in a Vanguard. His design brief was one line: "I want a ship that doesn't die." The Bulwark is that ship, achieved by adding more of everything that wasn't killing him.
SW-04 V-1 Marksman — Design Notes ship_built(V1) The first Veiled-designed ship released to Coalition pilots. The Veiled engineer who designed it had never met a Coalition pilot before the briefing. His question: "How far away do you prefer to be from things that want to kill you?" The answer informed the design entirely.
SW-05 V-2 Phantom — Design Notes ship_built(V2) Veth's direct design. He has said publicly that the Phantom is the ship he would have wanted to fly during his escape from Telos space. The phase-shift technology is the same quantum-tunneling principle he used in the Halen-Class Module — in miniature, applied to hull phasing rather than consciousness.
SW-06 V-3 Striker — Design Notes ship_built(V3) Designed by a Veiled engineering team rather than a single designer. The result is a ship with no clear identity except "more fire rate." The Choir of Names gave it a liturgical name translating as "the one that does not stop."
SW-07 C-1 Apex — Design Notes ship_built(C1) The Apex design history. Five years of Coalition-Veiled joint engineering. The Choir of Names requested the right to name it. Coalition command agreed. The Choir's name: "the ship that resists the doctrine." Coalition pilots call it the Apex.
SW-08 C-2 Resonator — Design Notes ship_built(C2) The Resonator was designed around a single physics principle: that sustained coherent energy emission can amplify itself through resonance feedback. The Veiled engineers call this "the obvious ship." They had assumed the Coalition had already built it.
SW-09 C-3 Singularity — Design Notes ship_built(C3) The Singularity's origin in Veth's single off-hand comment: "Sometimes the answer is to be the singularity." A Coalition engineer took this literally. The result is the most powerful single-shot platform in the fleet, and also the most expensive thing the Coalition has ever built per unit.
SW-10 W1 Pulse Cannon — Field Record stage_clear(5) The Pulse Cannon's combat history. The most widely used weapon in Coalition service. Every pilot who has ever flown for the Coalition has fired one. Its combat record spans 80 years and is longer than any other weapon system in service.
SW-11 W3 Coherence Beam — Engineering Notes weapon_built(W3) The Coherence Beam's development. The Veiled schematics were initially classified as impossibly advanced by Coalition engineers. They were correct — the beam relies on a method of maintaining photon coherence across extended plasma that Coalition physics had not developed. It took 3 years to fabricate the first functional unit.
SW-12 W4 Hawking Bolt — Physics Supplement weapon_built(W4) Additional physics notes on the Hawking Bolt. The contained micro-singularities are not actually black holes in the full sense — they are quantum-field constructs that simulate black hole boundary conditions. The distinction matters for physics. For the target, it does not.
SW-13 W5 Penrose Lance — Veth's Notes weapon_built(W5) Veth's personal engineering notes on the Penrose Lance, shared with the Codex at his request. "I used what Halen taught me. I hope the irony is apparent. I hope, more, that the outcome makes the irony worth it."
SW-14 W6 Anomaly Field — Ethics Review weapon_built(W6) The Coalition Ethics Committee's review of the Anomaly Field weapon. The committee met 7 times. The key question: does locally modifying physical constants constitute an act of the same category as the Apparatus? The final finding: no, for the same reason that bending a law is not the same as repealing it.
SW-15 W7 Cosmic String Spear — Rarity Notes weapon_built(W7) The Cosmic String Spear is the rarest weapon in Coalition service. Each unit requires materials and fabrication precision that limits production to approximately 3 units per year. The Coalition has 47 in service. Every one is logged by serial number.
SW-16 W8 Boltzmann Cascade — Field Assessment weapon_built(W8) Coalition field assessment of the Boltzmann Cascade. Summary: "Unpredictable. Effective. Pilots either love it or refuse to touch it. No middle position has been recorded. The Veiled engineer who designed it considers both responses philosophically coherent."
SW-17 Heat System — Engineering pilot_rank(6) The heat management system applied universally across all Coalition and Veiled weapons. Originally a Veiled engineering standard, adopted by the Coalition after the alliance. The Veiled rationale: "A weapon that fires without limit is a weapon that cannot be disciplined. Discipline is the difference between a tool and a liturgy."
SW-18 Module System — Overview pilot_rank(3) Technical overview of the module system. Three slot types, 18 modules, M0–M3 progression. Notes on the Halen-Class and Veth-Class modules as special-condition unlocks.

Category 8 — Enemy Bestiary (15 entries)

Voice: Coalition intelligence reports, occasionally with pilots' field notes appended.

Entry Unlock Trigger Summary
B-01 Grunt Classes (G1–G5) enemy_kill(G1, 20) Overview of all five Grunt types. Intelligence assessment. Field note appended by an unnamed pilot: "G1s are the ones that don't know they're supposed to be hard. G5s have figured it out."
B-02 Strafer Classes (S1–S2) enemy_kill(S1, 10) Strafer doctrine: cross-fire coverage. S2 variants were introduced in year 3 of the Frontier War when the Telos determined the Coalition had learned to dodge S1 patterns.
B-03 Bomber Classes (B1–B5) enemy_kill(B1, 15) Bomber doctrine: suppression through area denial. B5 variants are considered elite-tier by Coalition doctrine despite not being classified as elites. Pilots disagree with this classification.
B-04 Sniper Classes (Sn1–Sn3) enemy_kill(Sn1, 5) Sniper doctrine: precision theological fire. Sn3 patterns are liturgically derived — their firing rhythm matches a specific Telos prayer cadence. Intelligence analysts believe this is intentional.
B-05 Kamikaze Classes (K1–K4) enemy_kill(K1, 20) Kamikaze doctrine and Telos theology. In Telos theology, a pilot who destroys themselves along with the enemy has performed the most complete act of war-as-liturgy. K4 pilots receive specific liturgical honors from the Choir of Names.
B-06 E1 Choral Knight enemy_kill(E1, 5) Intelligence profile on Choral Knight elite units. Hand-selected. Named by the Choir. Their formations are considered liturgical performances — each engagement is rehearsed. Field note: "They know what they're doing. That's the part that's hard to explain to new pilots."
B-07 E2 Inquisitor Hunter enemy_kill(E2, 5) Inquisitor Hunter profile. Assigned specifically to anti-Veiled operations. Each unit has a specific Veiled defector as their theological assignment. Some have been pursuing their assigned target for decades.
B-08 E3 Geometer Saint enemy_kill(E3, 3) Geometer Saint profile. The engineering-theological elite. Their bullet patterns are mathematical proof-structures rendered in plasma. To fight a Geometer Saint is to be argued with.
B-09 E4 Apparatus Guardian enemy_kill(E4, 1) Apparatus Guardian profile. Adaptive AI. Does not repeat patterns against the same pilot. Every engagement updates its tactical model. The only enemy in the game that learns. Field note: "The second time is harder. The third time, you're fighting a different enemy."
B-10 Boltzmann Construct depth_reached(50) The endless-mode anomaly. Not a Telos weapon — a physics phenomenon. Coalition physics team: "The bleed-through field has created conditions where thermal fluctuations occasionally produce coherent military-grade structures. The universe should not be able to do this. It is doing this."
B-11 Bullet Types — Field Guide enemy_kill(G5, 10) A pilot's field guide to all 9 bullet types. Which enemies use which patterns. Dodge geometry for each type. Written by an anonymous Frontier veteran. The entry on Threading patterns ends: "If you can read this, you have survived one. I am not sure how."
B-12 Formation Doctrine stage_clear(8) Coalition intelligence analysis of Telos formation tactics. The key insight: formations are not tactical — they are liturgical. Understanding the liturgy predicts the formation. The Veiled translated this. The Coalition now trains pilots in basic Telos liturgical structure.
B-13 Ace Pilots — Field Notes depth_reached(200) Field notes on ace-tier enemies encountered in deep endless mode. Coalition pilots who have faced them report the experience of fighting the same enemy is qualitatively different from campaign encounters. "They have stopped using pattern libraries. They are inventing."
B-14 Enemy HP Scaling — Engineering Notes pilot_rank(20) Technical notes on how the Telos have been scaling enemy HP in response to Coalition weapon improvements. The Telos adaptation is faster than expected. Veth's assessment: "They are learning from us. Of course they are. They have been learning from the universe for 800 years."
B-15 The Witnessed Dead codex_chain(V-15) The Witnesses' cumulative record of enemy combatant deaths in the campaign. Includes names of all named Telos enemies defeated. The Witnesses record enemy dead as well as friendly. Their theological position: "They believed what they believed. They died for it. That is worth recording."

Category 9 — Recovered Fragments (12 entries)

Voice: Primary sources — personal logs, letters, prayers, intercepted transmissions. Unfiltered.

Entry Unlock Trigger Summary
RF-01 Telos Prayer — "Before the Crossing" stage_clear(6) A standard Telos pre-battle prayer, translated. Beautiful in its way. "Let what we do today bring the matter of the universe one step closer to what it was always meant to become."
RF-02 A Cantor's Log stage_clear(10) Personal log of a Telos cantor recovered from a destroyed ship after Stage 8. The cantor describes the day's engagement as a liturgical performance gone slightly wrong — the formations were off-rhythm due to a junior pilot's error. He is more concerned about the liturgical failure than the combat loss.
RF-03 Veiled — Letter Between Families stage_clear(14) A letter between two Veiled families at Achernar Station, included in the Codex with permission. Discusses the day's news, a child's birthday, a minor dispute about kitchen hours. The last line: "I hope this is still the kind of letter worth writing. I believe it is. Write back soon."
RF-04 Coalition Pilot's Log stage_clear(12) Personal log of a Coalition pilot from Stage 10 operations. "I have stopped trying to understand what they believe. I understand now that they believe it completely. That is enough to know."
RF-05 Oreth's Final Paper — Fragment codex_chain(KF-21) A fragment of Oreth's original dissent paper. The final section, translated: "The mathematics are not a refutation of the Crossing's beauty. They are a refutation of its outcome. These are different things. I am asking the Mathematician-Saints to hold both thoughts simultaneously. I understand this is difficult. It is also necessary."
RF-06 Halen — Early Correspondence codex_chain(KF-09) Letters from young Halen to his instructor, recovered from Telos archives by Veiled defectors. He was 15 years old. He was already better at the mathematics than his instructor. The letters are polite about this.
RF-07 Sira-Vel — The Naming codex_chain(KF-02) Sira-Vel's account of the moment she decided to leave. She was attending a Choir of Names ceremony for a ship named in preparation for an Apparatus deployment run. The ship was named "The First Morning of Completion." She left the ceremony, went to her quarters, and began composing the defection logistics within the hour.
RF-08 Veth — Field Journal Entry codex_chain(KF-06) A journal entry from the night Veth decided to leave. Not addressed to anyone. "He read it. I know he read it. He understood it. And then he went back to work. I waited three months to see if he would say something. He did not. I am leaving tomorrow. I do not know if I am leaving him or leaving the Apparatus. I think by now they are the same thing."
RF-09 The Choir's Name for the War stage_clear(18) The Choir of Names' liturgical name for the current conflict, translated: "The argument about whether the sketch is the finished work." Coalition analysts have noted this is actually a reasonable description.
RF-10 Intercepted Telos Transmission stage_clear(23) An intercepted Telos command transmission from Stage 20 operations, translated. The Telos commander is reporting the engagement result to Halen. Halen's response (also intercepted): "Continue. The Crossing does not require our presence to be inevitable." He sounds, in the translation, entirely at peace.
RF-11 Witnesses' Record — Stage 30 achievement_unlock(H-02) The Witnesses' record of Stage 30, as submitted to the Coalition and Veiled archives. The document is 47 pages. The Codex entry contains the last paragraph only: "The Architect-Saint's final transmission has been recorded in full. The Commander's actions have been recorded in full. The silence after has been recorded. It lasted eight seconds. We have recorded the eight seconds."
RF-12 What the Choir Said depth_reached(500) The Choir of Names' transmission following the Apparatus's fall, finally translated after 14 months of analysis. It is not grief. It is not celebration. It is the Choir's naming ceremony for the event itself. The event's liturgical name translates, approximately, as: "The moment when the argument was answered without either side being wrong about what mattered most." The Codex entry notes: "This is the closest the Choir of Names has ever come to a compliment."

The Witnesses have noted that you have read everything. They have added your pilot designation to a second list — the list of those who wanted to know. It is a shorter list than the list of those who flew here.

Sira-Vel, informed of this, said: "Good. They should know all of it."

Veth, informed of this, said nothing. He returned to his desk. Some of the engineers believe he was moved. He has not confirmed this.

The Choir of Names will not say what name they have given you. They say this is because the name is yours, not ours to share. If you want to know it, you must ask them.

You know how to reach them.

This final entry grants an additional 500 XP and unlocks achievement Co-04 "The Complete Record".
